No one gets it?!! Anyone know of any good podcasts or TED talks that discuss PTSD, Depression and Anxiety and how to recover?

I have been trawling podcasts on spotify trying to find a good mental health app that talks about PTSD and how to recover. Same with depression. It seem just about anyone can start a podcast these days and claim to have advice on wellbeing, mental health or whatever subject they choose.  I also find there is a plethora of aussie 'influencers' who have podcasts about 'anxiety and self love'. Who talk about eating healthy, finding balance, exercise and who talk about getting nervous say over a work speech or upcoming wedding. I know that is anxiety but I want to hear from people with actual disorders that have affected their ability to function - work, socialise, sleep etc and how to recover. Not so much people that have anxious feelings that still manage to function and lead a full life.

I exercise daily, eat well and I am still unwell because I actually have a mental health problem with PTSD and Panic Disorder.

Does anyone know of any good, actually relatable podcasts, TED talks or audio books that actually gets what it is like to live with a disabling mental health problem?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum @cloudy2019, we can see where you are coming from. Looking at the health & wellness sections of the podcast does bring up a lot of lifestyle-type programs, which you are not looking for. Have you seen All In The Mind by ABC RN? This one looks at the brain and the connection with behaviour.

Thank you for the welcome and the reply. No I have not will check that out thank you. 🙂

I guess I am looking for specific recovery stories and it seems hard to find.

I found some TED talks on grief and loss and one good mental health app on spotify. There must be more.

Well not sure about podcasts or Ted talks but i can tell you that as someone experiencing anxiety, depression, with other symptoms and having had PTSD in the past that it can be a challenge.

I have found many things help to deal with all of the above.

When i need to talk i have a few contacts lifeline, parentline and beyond blue 24 hrs. Who i choose depends on the main issue triggering me at the time.  I ensure i develop a routine of chores that i do each day, try to eat healthy or have junk as required, keep a diary to ensure i attend to appointments/things for kids, keep up regular exercise and do things i enjoy, if my symptoms are acute i see a health professional and as dumb as it may sound

forgive myself if it all goes pearshaped and try again tomorrow.

.Another thing i do find helps is looking at stories about well known people who have mental illness who have recovered from serious symptoms.  One i looked at recently was about Kristy McNicoll an actress with bipolar.  The upshot of it was, look after yourself and find a new normal, work at finding your stressors and find things that give you joy and that will help build your strength. This may be helped by the right health professional to make suggestions and bounce ideas off.  For  me psychologists are brilliant for that.

You cant look after yourself or anyone else if your tank is empty.  Find those things that give you something and feeling better will follow.  It is not a one off cure it is multifaceted approach so outside of that i try and look at anthony robbins books, the happiness trap and any other book that peaks my interest.  Overall i try to keep positive and hopeful because the sun will come out tomorrow. Much love and perservere, you will get there.

In my experience you cope/manage PTSD, I never meet anyone who recovered?
