Alzheimers

Hi there, new to the forum. My 55 year old hubby has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimers. Seeing that this is all new to us, we know we have a long road ahead of us with many ups and downs. Is there anyone else in the forum with a similar story?

Re: Alzheimers

Hi Shaz51, my husband has had an MRI and other tests done. Once all the tests were done the specialist determined he had Alzheimers with progressive aphasia. Still getting my head around all this, my husband on the other hand has taken it all on board with a "she'll be ok" attitude, does not seemed to have phased him one bit. The only thing he got upset about was the possibility that he might lose his driving licence. At the moment he is on a restricted licence while we wait for a driving test to be done. He is in the early stages of Alzheimers so apart from having trouble with finding the right word in a conversation or forgetting minor things he seems ok. He has just started medication and that is suppose to help.

Re: Alzheimers

Hello @kate55, it is great to hear from you , thinking of you because it would be a big step , have you become a member of the Alzheimers forum , I do house cleaning for a couple whoes husband has alzheimers and Parkinson`s disease

I like to get my husband to havea  MRI and other tests done one day but he thinks it is just from the Medication he is on for Mental Illness

how are you going ?? have you been able to get the support you need , i have had lots of carer`s fatique over the years

What do you enjoy doing ? and remember you are not alone my friend , self care is soo important to look after others , I am still learning , I find for me doing little self care makes a difference

Re: Alzheimers

Very sad diagnosis. Recent findings found organic coconut oil can slow down Alzheimer's / dementia drematically (I know theyre not the same thing but it helps both).

Re: Alzheimers

Hi Shaz51

Hope you and your family had a great Christmas and New Year, we spent our Christmas with my husbands family and New Year with mine. Glad it is over as it gets busy at that time. I work a couple of days a week and the other days I look after my granddaughter, she is 3. My husband is doing ok. I have yet to contact Alzheimers Australia, just not ready yet. I don't have any hobbies, I have always been focused on family and looking after grandchildren. I guess my self care so to speak is watching a movie or listening to music or having the house to myself. I have great family support.

I hope your husband is doing ok.

Re: Alzheimers

Hello @kate55 Smiley Very Happy

Happy new year

We travelled down to see our S2 and S3 and their families between christmas and new year`s day , it was lovely but it get`s too much for my Husband who has MI

My 4 step children are adults now and all have a MI like their dad , it is inherited we found out

We are home now recovering before we start work again , we are self employed

my self care is small things like having a cuppa like you i love focusing  on my  family and extended family and looking after my mum

I always thought self care had to be big but i have learnt and still learning that it is the little self care is better for me

Re: Alzheimers

Hi Shaz51

Just a quick note, not much news here. At present my older granddaughter is on school holidays, she has spent some time with us, the family lives under 10 minutes away. We are all going away camping in a week, just before school resumes. I am looking forward to the break from work. My husband had a driving test last week, he has been on a restricted licence for a few months, he passed, so will keep his restricted licence, he will be tested again in 6 months. He is not happy that he has a restricted licence but it is better than no licence at all.
